Luke 2:6-7 – December 15th, 2020

“And while they were there, the time came for her to give birth. And she gave birth to her firstborn son and wrapped him in swaddling cloths and laid him in a manger, because there was no place for them in the inn.”

So Mary and Joseph have to leave their home and Go to Bethlehem and while they were there, Mary gives birth to Jesus. Forget the single hospital room with doctors, nurses, medical supplies, and sanitized instruments. Forget the birth plan that would be meticulously attended to by the trained midwife. I just hear Mary telling Joseph, “It wasn’t supposed to happen like this.” But the first time they hear Jesus cry, the first time Mary holds the baby in her arms, the first time Joseph consoles this tiny child, the magnitude of the situation they have found themselves in.

The beauty of this moment is that it was exactly how it was supposed to happen. That the savior of the world would be born into humility not glory. That the savior would not come as a mighty warrior but a fragile child. And that helps us to understand that no matter how out of control things may feel in our life, there is a God who is in control and is perfectly capable of bringing peace.
